Check what the rule is in your state before deciding the server makes under min wage. In my state servers make over min wage which is currently around $16 an hour for reg people and around $20-22 and up for servers. There is a sign hanging right in the window of my local Panda begging for employees at $22 an hour and I chatted with a server at a sit down place a year ago who said the going rate at that time was $22. Some are paying more. .

As someone who’s worn many hats, cash tips are most appreciated, and yes, we do live on them because the minimum wage for servers is less than everyone else’s but we still have to pay bills, like everyone else.

In New Jersey, the minimum wage for tipped employees, like waitresses, is $5.62 per hour.

If someone works 8 hours per day for 50 weeks, they work 2,000 hours. $25,000 ÷ 2,000 hours = $12.50 per hour. $5.63 + $12.50 = $18.13 per hour while NJ minimum wage for non-tipped employees $15.49 per hour. $18.13 per hour is $36,260 per year while $15.49 per hour is $30,980 per year.
