MSI

I did my first shop with MSI a week ago and uploaded my ID. The company now says it needs an EIN number. Will I have to provide this before I get paid? I'd love to have some extra money on the 5th.

They do require an EIN, will not accept your ss#. It only takes a couple of minutes to get one though.
How much is it to get an EIN?

LOL Very true. I had a brain freeze. My other job is content writing, so my mind floats away from time to time.

I have shopped with TrendSource for years, and don't have an EIN. Perhaps it's different for new shoppers, don't know. There has been discussion on the forum about shoppers getting an EIN - pros and cons. If you're interested, use the search function, all dates, for more info.
It's funny - I got the EIN, and then I never gave it to MSI. I no longer have self-assign privileges, but I wouldn't ever do their shops unbonused anyway.
With this company is it reasonable to expect payment on the 5th for a job done on 7/26 if my EIN isnt in yet?

Takes 5 minutes to get the EIN online. If you are planning to get it, go ahead and do it tonight and submit it. You should get paid no problem on the 5th, then.
Actually, I have missed the cutoff by a few hours. I got an error message on the IRS website saying the only accept them during the following times:

Our new hours of operation are Monday through Friday 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Eastern time.

Isn't it weird that a website had business hours? smiling smiley

I tried calling the IRS on Monday and basically, the recording said, "We are too busy. Call back Wednesday." When I didn't hang up and chose all the options to get to a person, they hung up on me. I called back on Tuesday, not Wednesday though.
I don't get it - why is this necessary ? On the IRS site it says the following - none of which seem to apply to IC working alone.
==================================================
Do you have employees? YES NO
Do you operate your business as a corporation or a partnership? YES NO
Do you file any of these tax returns: Employment, Excise, or Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms? YES NO
Do you withhold taxes on income, other than wages, paid to a non-resident alien? YES NO
Do you have a Keogh plan? YES NO
Are you involved with any of the following types of organizations? YES NO
Trusts, except certain grantor-owned revocable trusts, IRAs, Exempt Organization Business Income Tax Returns
Estates
Real estate mortgage investment conduits
Non-profit organizations
Farmers' cooperatives
Plan administrators
It must be something to do with the way they file taxes. Either that or they want to further validate their shoppers? It seems very unnessesary. I'm going to file Monday morning, but Mondays payday so I think I may have to wait till the 14th to see my money :-(

I'm not replying as I have written enough about the EIN#. I will say I got one over a year ago and can self-assign the
grocery stores I love, and yes they pay twice a month. They had a link on their site, takes 5 minutes to get a free one, if you
got the job without an EIN#, you will be paid, but cannot self-assign (my experience only). I now work for them regularly.
Read the older threads, or better yet, go to their site and find out.

The EIN is so they can further distance themselves from responsibility to their Shoppers. Maritz tried it, and they backed up. Trendsource has backed up a bit. I have no intention of getting one and I still get plenty of shops from them...

I'm still learning 24/7.
I prefer to give out my EIN number than my social security number, for safety reason.

They always pay and quicker than most, so what's the thing about distancing, please explain that one. Been almost two years since I got the EIN#, and have worked regularly for them with no problem.

That's easy Irene. It helps relieve them of any responsibility to Shoppers, while doing shops. For example - You cuss someone out during a shop and MSI has no liability. If you are injured during a shop - Same thing...

mrcomputer101 - I thought they already had that because we are independent contractors?

I'm not sure, I don't lawyer.

They, (Like Maritz), found they still has some liability. Therefore the change. Also, in the area of reporting income by IC's.

BTW...next pay date is the 20th, not the 14th.
The IRS is wanting me to call during their business hours because they could not issue me an EIN.

MSI did not pay me on the 5th.

Does this mean I won't get paid?

That would be accurate. Surprised they let you do a shop without it. Just call the number IRS gave you. They probably just have some questions.
I'm assuming you are signed up with your SSN. I don't have an EIN and they have paid me for my shops.

I signed up with my SSN but did not get paid for my 7/26 shop yet, and I have another on 8/10.

Then it most likely didn't make the cut off date for the early August payments. Can you tell when it was approved or anything like that? I probably only work with them once or twice a year and am not that familiar with the website. BTW, when I log in it is still telling me I need an EIN and has been for a couple of years now.

According to MSI's records:

Shopped on 7/26
Received on 7/26
Verified on 7/29

Are they a direct deposit or PayPal company? You may want to verify your information is there and correct. I'm finding it hard to believe the payment is delayed over the EIN. They still have way too many shoppers who haven't bothered.
