MSC'S: Some do not openly recruit new shoppers???

I remember reading a posting either here or on the V GOD site many months back about a few msc's which never openly recruit new shoppers and only do so via networking or insider referrals.

How common is this? And do they likely only recruit very advanced shoppers, such as those who are chosen for high stuff like cruise ship assignments???

What type of shops do they generally have???

I would also like to know this. There are several I have seen mentioned that have no sign-up link on their website.
Harland Clarke comes to mind. They are all about financial. Maybe being extra cautious.

The first assignment I got from them was scheduled through Kerns. I don't remember there was an application, I was just given the assignment. BTW, they are an awesome company. I did a lot of shops for them for about 3 years, but now they don't have any cu in my area.

FYI: Harland Clarke occasionally posts jobs here under "Mystery Shopping Job Board." You will find a scheduler's email on those posts, and you can contact that person directly to apply.
Harland Clarke does have an application and for the most part they ignore it. For a long time they worked mostly with their existing shoppers and with referrals. Postings to job boards seem to be fairly recent and I don't believe they have a job board of their own even now. About 5 or 6 years ago they changed schedulers and the ones they have now are much more responsive. Nice company.
Yes - there are some like what you describe that do hospitality shops - complicated multi-night hotel/resort stays that pay well beyond the rates that people see on job boards, require in-person trainings, minimum committments per year, and would be most appropriate for an experienced shopper. They might ocassionally recruit via a site like this or through a scheduling agency if they have an immediate need, but generally do not. I work for four companies like this - and in all cases I landed there because someone (another MSC or a shopper) referred me.

There may be other companies in other sectors as well - I don't know since I do not do other types of shops. Maybe some video shopping companies might operate like this as well? Just a guess.
