When they think you are a mystery shopper but kinda get things wrong

Today I was in a Shell conducting a mystery shop. Even I would have suspected me to be a mystery shopper due to what was expected of me.

The only cashier clearly thought so too. She was being extremely helpful. When it was time to check out, she couldn't wait to tell me about their great gas and rewards program. She even handed me a flyer and tried to get me to sign up right then. She wanted that golden reward!

The problem was I wasn't shopping Shell. I was shopping the convenience store.

Thankfully, the store was in complete compliance.

I was talking to an acquaintance's daughter, who is a hostess for a restaurant that I shop ( in a different town). She told me about how they "always know" who their shopper is because of the questions they ask and also a nearby restaurant alerts them when they're shopped, so then they know they're next. However, this restaurant has no specific questions to ask. Also the other restaurant must be with a different company (I've never seen a shop for them), so there is no connection between them. But THEY KNOW!
Years ago, I stopped at blue station that I had shopped before, but this time I was just needing to use the restroom and knew they would have one. While in the bathroom, I decided that I could use a bottle of water so went to buy one and it occurred to me that my in-store actions were like I was shopping, so I asked for a receipt from the clerk that was on his phone and not in uniform just for the heck of it. Before I left, I noticed him come out, in a proper work shirt and address that overflowing garbage can in front of the store that he didn't seem to care about before.
For the gas station convenience stores that I shop, I pay for the gas inside, pump my gas and then do the inside evaluation. When I return for the evaluation, the employees are magically in uniform with their name tags showing, and the bathrooms are being cleaned.
