Help! Need advice on a shop I did today

Hello all. I did a grocery store shop today. When I got to the check out part, everything went pretty well.. EXCEPT She asked if I had the rewards and I had to play dumb she went into a lengthly detail about it (more than usual) and I think it distracted her from what she was doing. She handed me my receipt and a coupon that popped out and I didn't realize at first (because I was trying to remember all of her info about the rewards card/coupons) but it seems she didn't give me back my change. It wasn't a lot, but, thinking her til would be off and having worked retail before, I called the store to mention it. The customer service person was VERY rude over the phone! Maybe it was because the amount was only something like $3? Now the store has my name and number because they wanted it when I reported the shorted change. I haven't filled out my shop report? Do I mention the shorted money if it isn't asked on the report? (I don't think it is). Any advice is appreciated.

No way would I have called the store and given my name and number, I would have written off the $3. Now that you have, and the store has your name and number, I would e-mail the scheduler if there is no place in the report to note the incident.
I would have done just what you did. And I would leave it off the report if there isn't a pertinent spot to reply. Like you said the till would be off. Besides that I'm sure the shop didn't pay that much.
I would not have done what you did myself. I would've let it go..and not report it either.
I suppose I should have let it go, but, I was more concerned about their til than anything. UGG. I regret it after the customer service person was so rude, however.
Well, I am contacting the scheduler and letting her know what happend.. we'll see what they say.
I wouldn't be concerned about her till. It was her mistake and besides, they are allowed a certain amount to be under/over. Good luck!
phlutter, what is done is water under the bridge. Hopefully, the scheduler will not believe you have compromised yourself or your report, and your work is accepted. My advice for the future, is that while on assignment you wear only one hat, the shopper hat.
I have to respectfully disagree. Many of these shops say stuff like make money while you do your regular shopping. Suppose she had been shorted $10? What about $20?
Stay in your lane. You were hired to shop the store and the cashier, not phone customer service. Accurately report the results of your shop. Once you have done that, your business with the MSC is over. If you were shorted change, how you deal with it is none of their business.

Hey, 3 bucks is 3 bucks. I would have gotten my money back and redone the shop.

The scheduler seemed to be okay with me calling customer service but said to report the shop normally without mentioning it (which is what I did).
Good for you. Not reporting what you did may have saved the shop.

I would have never contacted customer service. I am pretty sure at least a couple of the
MSCs have guidelines indicating that shoppers should never contact the client about the shop.
They normally ask if you received the right change and that's where I would report the incorrect
change.

Well, advising the scheduler before you made your report was a very good move.
I don't think phlutter "contact(ed) the client about the shop." Phlutter did not mention that he or she is a shopper. This is an extracurricular matter.

The responses to this question certainly have given me pause. Who cares about saving the shop? This is a grocery shop. What if she had been shorted $20. What if she had been mugged? What if she slipped and fell? I could go on and on.
Lucy, I agree with you completely!

She did not have to mention the shop but she contacted the client
connected with the shop. I would say she was lucky she contacted
her scheduler first before making a report. If she was mugged, that was
a different thing. If she slipped, it is a different story. It has nothing to
do with the shop.

But of course, it all depends on the person. I would sacrifice the
wrong change to maintain my record, especially if it is my favourite MSC.
I cannot say everyone should. To each his own.
I think I would have called about this, too, and probably just hung up when the rude person on the phone wanted my name and number. Or I would have said I lived too far away to come back for $3 and I just wanted them to know because the cashier's till would be off, and still not have given my name and number.

If there was no place in the report to put that information, I can't see how it would have compromised the shop. It's sort of an extraneous isse, done post shop, isn't it? As it was, because the OP gave name and number, then it was probably a good idea to let the scheduler know. But not sure even under those circumstances, it was necessary....

I learn something new every day, but not everyday!
I've learned to never trust spell-check or my phone's auto-fill feature.
