Mall Gift Card Shop: Am I missing something??

The shop instructions say I am to buy a $25 American Express gift card to use any way I like, and that the service fee will be reimbursed. Then, it says the cost of the gift card will not be reimbursed. There is no shop payment. Am I missing something? Do they really expect shoppers to do a shop for free?

I'm posing this question because I know I MUST be reading this incorrectly. Why take this shop if I can't get a fee for performing it and the report?

The interesting this is, I've seen this report before but with a $5 shop payment. Now they aren't paying anything. What is the point?

Sincerely,

I saw this too. In my case, I was awarded $2.95 for my shop. You buy the card, you keep the card.

To me, it's like you are doing the Mall a favor...
There are a bunch of threads on this and it always causes confusion.

Not knowing which company this is for, I can tell you that one MSC pays $25 for the shop and reimburses the service fee. The problem is this, people keep thinking that the $25 is a reimbursement and it is not. The $20 or $25 you spend to buy the gift card is still yours to spend any way you like and the $25 the MSC sends you is the shop fee. Let's say you wanted to buy $25 worth of gas. Instead of giving your $25 to the gas station, you give the money to the mall and get an American Express gift card which you can then use to purchase $25 in gas. So you are not out the $25.

Equal rights for others does not mean fewer rights for you. It's not pie.

BUT then why bother going to the mall? I think I'm confused too.
Yes. You are missing something.

You buy a $20 gift card. Then you have a $20 gift card to use anywhere you want. You break even on the gift card.

You are reimbursed $2.95 for the fee. You break even on the fee.

On top of that, you are paid a $25 shopper fee.

You net a total of $25 for the shop.

I think you meant $5 for the shopper fee and now that's gone, so the net profit is now $20 for your time and gas :^(
Thanks for taking this round Lisa...not only are there a bunch of posts half the thread titles are the same too and yes folks you are missing something... a $25.00 shop PROFIT.

But HaveARayDay says

If he is right about there being no shop payment, then he gets nothing other than the gift card fee reimbursed.

If the shop instructions are accurate, then that IS a crappy shop. Seems like there is a detail missing somewhere...

I think the shop instructions are written a bit confusingly (is that a word - I don't care) but look at it this way. You have 20.00 in your left hand and need to buy gas with it but first you stop at the mall and you take that same 20.00 that is yours and give it to the employee and turn it into a mall gift card (paying a 2.95 fee) and leave the mall with your same 20.00 in a different form. Keep it in your left hand so you remember that was your 20 just in a different form.

Keep it there for weeks until you get paid for the shop which is $25.00 and 2.95 for the fee. Put that money in your right hand...now you have 20.00 in your left hand (it was yours all along) and 27.95 in your right hand. 2.95 of that is a reimbursement for the fee you paid and that other 25.00 is all yours.

So now you have 20.00 of yours in your left and the profit 25.00 in your right. You are 25 ahead of the game.

Hopefully HaveARayDay is just misreading something. Because he said, no shop fee, AND no reimbursement for the card. I have never done one of these, but that would kinda stink.

Well if it does say no shop fee then yes that would be bad - the one I have here says says shoppers pay 25.00, special fee expense 2.95 and yes it does say the card is not reimburesed (it is not you are just changing your 20 for a card worth 20.00).

Liz
The ones I've seen say:

Your Fees:
$25.00 - Fee for successful shop completion
$2.95 - Special Expenses limit (Up to $2.95 for the service fee)

There's another round of these shops this week, and they say the same thing.

I've never seen one for $5 or no fee. That's ridiculous if that's what they're actually paying.
I did a Retail gift card shop. The retailer did (DID) not have any or sold any gift cards. Guess what the shopper's fee is??????????

You guess it ZIP, ZERO, and NADA. So how is that fair?

I think the MSC is trying to see how many fools can they get to shopp for them offering nothing. I bought a cup of coffee and said at least reimburse me for my coffee. Because my time and gas are already spent.

That's a different shop - and yes that seems unfair. I do that shop - if it's the one I am thinking of and have never come out of the store without a gift card. Actually I did it the other day and the store was closed but I was still to go there to verify that and I will get still get paid the amount the gift card purchase was suppose to be.

I'm sure missing something...! I keep applying for these shops but never get assigned. It's a good deal and all inside with the a/c. I was confused the first time I saw these, but once I understood it from all the good folks here on the Forum, I wanted them. Now, good folks, what do I do to get them?

You could come move to my town - they got bonused up to 40.00 here yesterday. I have just done too many. My husband is off tomorrow (one good thing about his weird rotating schedule I guess) and he has applied but hasn't gotten it yet.

Liz
There's one sitting on the board here for tomorrow. There are also some really high-paying (for this MSC) motorcycle shops on the board for today. For the life of me, I cannot figure out why someone didn't take them. Hopefully, they will extend them by a few days and I can be that someone.

Thanks guys. Because of the explanations above I get it. I was missing the fact that I get to keep the gift card, plus I get a $25 shoppers fee.

I was confused by the following:

"The service fee cost to purchase the gift card will be reimbursed. There are no additional fees after the service fee, you have the entire amount to spend. The amount of the gift card is not reimbursed."

The last sentence got me up in a tissy. But there is no need to reimburse me for the card since I can still use it. So, I am indeed getting $25 to buy a $20 or $25 gift card that I get to keep.

Sincerely,

I'm glad you got that figured out. What I was confused about was the part about "no shop payment." Glad to find out they don't think people will actually consider that.

Beside the fact that a gift card is supposed to be purchase, if the retailer does not have any gift cards -----> a "gift card cannot be purchased." When there is no shopper's fee and the actual reimburment is the gift card then you will not get paid for doing an "up to 60 minutes" in a shop.

Apparently the MSC sponsoring the Mall gift cards are not the MSC shopping the retail gift cards shops. I just want to get paid for doing the shop, period, whether the shop has gift cards or not. "I did not buy them all so they could run out." Keep in mind that one could only purchase the retailers gift card, not someone elses brand.

LIZ: where are you, I'll go there. :-)
I've done these before. They are legit. I had to purchase a $25 gift card, and was reimbursed the $2.95 plus a $12 shop payment. The payment has gone up...which is good because if the form is still the same, it's a PITA. Very easy to fill out until you get to the bottom and have to address every.single.question, regardless of if it was Y/N. To me, the $25 payment is fair for that extra work. Plus, you get a gift card that you can use yourself or gift it! Plus, this MSC pays quickly. I've always been paid within 2 weeks of completing a shop for them. Ahoy maties! ;-)

Ok I think we are talking two different shops here - the Mall Gift Card shop where I can't imagine that the mall office/customer service would not have gift cards (AMEX) since there are hundreds of advertisements throughout the mall for them and a zillion choices of the plain old AMEX one once you get to the office/counter and the other Retail Gift Card shop where you go into into individual stores to assess the gift card situation and then purchase a card for your "pay" I have come across some that have just one display and only a few cards but never have I come across any that did not have the cards (well except for the one I did the other day where the store was totally closed and gone). I was under the impression I would still be paid for that shop since they required me to go to the site. I will update later.

I live in the Midwest HAHA.

Liz
I hope I get paid also. Imagine the golden arches not having gift cards? :-(
This shop now has a $10 bonus at my location. I'm out of rotation. :'(
In my area of Dayton, Oh., you must purchase the card, but with no reimbursement. You then are paid $15, less the service charge, which equals a net of $12.05.
I am in touch with the scheduler at the MSC. She said that she will bring it to the Accounting department attention. I do want to get PAID.

Lol - after all that you still didn't put gas in your car and now your hands are full and you can't drive! smiling smiley

I was so looking forward to this shop sad smiley

I've done all the malls in my area, and the one left didn't sell gift cards because the mall just changed owners. Ugh. The lady looked at me like I was crazy for walking in the management office looking for a gift.

Had to call and email my scheduler and let her know sad smiley
