New to the trade

A friend had done this in California for a while and thought it was fun. After getting a notice from a job service here in SE Georgia about them being needed, I contacted and found it was a service out of Florida, asking for a reg fee on my credit card. Seems to me there should be firms out there who would be happy to have someone aboard who's been around a while (a seasoned citizen) with some life's experiences behind them and who could give a pretty honest assesement of service, product(s), etc. How do I keep from being scammed in this business?

Read everything you can on this forum and utilize the official list of mystery shopping companies here. You are absolutely right and should never "pay to shop." Legitimate companies do not charge a fee and do not send you large checks up front or promise unbelievable pay like $200 for 2 hours work. Most jobs you will start with pay anywhere from $5 to $15 depending on the company and level of detail required. Some do not pay at all, but will reimburse you for a meal. In all cases your payment and/or reimbursement will be from 2 weeks up to 3 months following the job not before.

Always happy to provide a nudge. Don't forget to take advantage of the "Sticky Notes" at the beginning of the New Mystery Shopper and Mystery Shopping Companies forums. Most of your questions will be answered there, but if not feel free to come back with specific questions. General questions are harder to answer. Also you can get a lot of info about individual companies by using the search function. There's usually at least one thread and often many more about each Mystery Shopping Company. My early days of MSing involved mostly applying and researching. All in all, a good investment in time.
