Cart before the horse

I've read that you should only apply to work with mystery shopper companies that have shops in your area. How do you know if a company has shops in your area before registering with a company then checking the shop posting list on their site?

Where did you read that? Using Jobslinger to target companies with shops in your area is good when you are starting out. The problem is the listings can be out of date and not every MSC posts jobs there. There is also the common practice of clients changing MSCs, some on a regular basis. The bottom line is registering with companies is part of the process and that time is the investment you make in a business that requires little financial investment. No business is easy to start, a mystery shopping business is just less expensive than most.

I've been mystery shopping for a LONG time and I have never heard that. In fact I don't think anyone knows how to register with companies that just have shops in their area. Jobslinger is one way but certainly their list is not extensive and will only have a few of the companies that have jobs in your areas. You have to do the work like the rest of us and register with as many companies as you can before you know who has work in your area.

I agree - anyone who tells you to apply to work only with MSCs that have shops in your area is putting the cart before the horse. Anyone who tells you that is probably neither a highly experienced or highly successful mystery shopper. Register with as many companies as you can and figure out later which have assignments in your area. And that can change quickly if clients contract with different MSCs.
