Hero Citations & Gold Stars

I know we've discussed this before, but I just read an email from intellishop for an auto-service shop where they're paying $X (no bonus) and giving a Hero citation.

Again, I know we've discussed it before, but today I'm smiling as I imagine their management styles in the office. I'm picturing my first grade teacher with grey hair and glasses as the CEO. She's very enthusiastic and claps any time someone schedules a shop. She promptly walks over, pats them on the back, and proudly gives them a gold star for their blouse. Smiles all around as everyone is so darned satisfied that they've done a good job and have a shiny gold star to show for their efforts.

Ha!

I would love to pay my mortgage with gold stars. I can picture myself getting laughed out of the bank.
A gold star and $2.79 will get you a cappuccinosmiling smiley

Edited because I just can't spell worth a darn this week.

hero citations are a way to get lower-quality shoppers (having bad track records and/or shop grades) in better standing with a company again. for these people, hero citations are a second chance. however, here citations are absolutely useless to shoppers who don't first have bad track records with a company.

those with good track records require appropriate financial compensation for efforts expended. those with bad track records require hero citations (without bonus pay) to simply stay employed, thereby offsetting their bad track records.

BOB"S COMMENT-Great thread reply. It's concise, correct and succinct. I've never seen this subject more accurately described; it makes me envious I hadn't composed this statement.
I have a hero citation for something I did not expect or want, simply because I completed seven airport shops while I battled upset stomach all throughout the day. But I would have appreciated it more if they gave me reimbursements for more of the food I was required to order, but barely ate in the restaurants, airport shops being (IMHO) not lucrative assignments.

it just sort of occured to me as i was writing it. that's probably how it goes. a merit system without financial compensation.

it slightly reminds me of when the boss at work would buy the employees pizza to motivate them. i would think to myself: "just pay me more money and i'll be motivated. pizza only lasts for a day."
Hero citations and gold stars. Will the bank take these on deposit?

Oh yeah, similar to what we get in my place of work. When we excel in our task, we are treated to an upscale restaurant. After a few of those, you notice your waistline expand. I can reward myself mystery shopping and even choose my companion. lol
Some of us come cheap. I would be ecstatic if my place of work rewarded me with a meal at even a downscale restaurant. (not fast food though). A raise and bonus (not very likely) once a year would be nice too.
But I am happy to see the above explanation of hero citations...it makes sense and I will no longer ponder why anyone would fall for that. Go out at the last minute to do a shop no one wanted with no extra compensation and maybe a bigger drive than you wanted which was the reason no one took the job in the first place. So when I have done them in the past because they might have been convenient I used to expect to get a plum job later...never happened. Now I know better.
I had a scheduler tell me recently that a hero citation would make me more likely to get the high-end assignments. I've shopped for this company for years and have a 10/10 average and I've never seen, let alone been assigned, a high-end assignment so either they adhere to the Super Secret Assignment Handout method (off-board) for the good jobs or the scheduler is very new and assumes there are better gigs than there are in my area! I did ask for a bonus instead which got a good laugh. Hey, didn't hurt to ask!
Show me da money. Last minute means extra money or no do. $110 to drive an hour to McDonalds? Sign me up. $10 - no can do.
