Kroger laying off 1000 office staff to lower costs and direct savings to stores.

I wonder if with this cost cutting if mystery shopping will be on the chopping block? To be honest not sure what actual benefit whether an employee smiled and made eye contact with customers is. As for competitor shops….well really waste of money that could be to attract real customers with lower prices.

Pickups have already been cut in almost all markets. Who knows if the in store data is helping at all. I guess we'll find out in time.

I agree with your opinion of competitor shops.

Grocery stores are well known for low, about 2%, margins.

AI will increase personnel productivity. I've used AI recently, which means the latest versions, and it can work surprisingly well for trip planning and creating CSV files that can be placed directly into Google My Maps. It's not perfect yet, but it gets scary close to extremely useful.
They are trying VERY hard to compete with stores that have similar pricing. Publix is more expensive but the difference is less than it used to be and Publix runs circles around them for service level.

Kroger employees generally hate their jobs from what I can tell. And how do you fix that? You can either give them better wages and working conditions OR you can threaten them when people report they are cutting corners on their cleaning, mishandling produce, and not being friendly.

Honestly, IMO, they're closest to Walmart for service level. At least, that is the case locally. But, prices are usually lower (especially on the basics) at Walmart. And, the produce at Walmart is usually better. So, they either give up on trying to pretend to be premium and become more like Walmart or they find a way to get their employees to not act aloof or surly.
Funny, I used AI to plan a road trip and it gave me completely different drive times than reality. You'd think a map would be something easily integrated into the system , but nope.... when I typed in the mistakes, AI said "oops" lol

There was a Kroger forum. From it, I learned that the visits and evaluations are discussed with employees. Is this still the case? I don't know. But who ever thought McDonalds and Papa Johns mystery shops would end.

Do not read so much, look about you and think of what you see there.
