Welcome to the Board! That is not the norm. Never pay to be a Mystery Shopper. Just start signing up with the companies listed here. The more you sign up with - The better chances you have...

Shopping Bama and parts of Georgia.
I'm still learning 24/7.
Don't do it! Any company that you have to pay to work for ain't the way to go! Try confero , shoppers critique, and kerns scheduling. These companies are the ones I work for. They don't require any kind of joining fee&they pay regularly.
Jobsingerplus.com and Jobslinger.com appear to be the same posted jobs.

I would go with the Jobslinger.com as they do not charge a fee.

The one problem with both is that they do not delete the shops that are assigned.
I understand there are some features to Jobslingerplus that could be especially useful if you needed to change your email address, phone etc. or sign up with all SASSIE companies as you can do global changes, additions. I am saving my 'free trial' for some time when I need to make such changes.

Not deleting shops is actually a benefit to shoppers who don't/haven't checked the site in a while. They allow you to see what jobs WERE available and so are likely to reappear in the future so you know you are signed up with appropriate companies. If I rush in and grab a self assign off a SASSIE site job board and you come in the next day, you will never know that the job ever existed.
